I Think You Should Pick

It’s hard to believe there hasn’t been a new episode of Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin’s Netflix show I Think You Should Leave in almost three years. Even so, I — and, I’m sure, many other slightly odd people — still think about this show pretty much on a daily basis. If you are also a fan of this show, I imagine, like me, you have some sort of idea of which sketches are your favorites, probably maintaining a rough mental ranking of your faves. I have been wanting to make something ITYSL-related just for fun, so with some spare time I made a little website, I Think You Should Pick, to pick and share favorite sketches from the show. To quote myself from the site:

This is a website for you to pick your favorite sketches from the show I Think You Should Leave and share them with the world. It was built by a huge fan (me) and is in no way affiliated with Netflix, Tim Robinson or the show — just a personal passion project.

My brain has been broken by this show (complimentary) so let’s share our favorite sketches and debate them for years to come!

I had this idea brewing for some time, and then last year, when The New York Times released a nice little feature allowing readers to submit a ballot for The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century , allowing you to select and share ten films (mine), I decided to copy them I got inspired. My site similarly produces a downloadable asset of your favorite sketches. These change from time to time, but here are my current favorite sketches:

I don’t think the technical details are all that interesting but it’s a pretty simple site that uses Next.js for the app framework which is definitely overkill, Tailwind CSS for styling, and some minimal shadcn. I just copied the shell of one of my many other projects to get started faster, so it’s over-engineered and could easily be refactored into just plain HTML/CSS/JS. One notable takeaway is that to create the downloadable and shareable asset I used the html2canvas library (link), which is a useful tool to know about if you need to generate screenshots with JavaScript.

Tangentially, I’ve been obsessed with retro 88x31 badges lately, so on a whim I created one for this site:

Feel free to use this for whatever.

I had it link to a Ko-fi page which I created not out of necessity but because thematically it made sense with the spirit of the button because you do, in fact, gotta give.

Here’s my Figma file if you want to see my incredibly unscientific design process for personal projects which basically amounts to:

  1. Compile an inspiration/mood board in Figma
  2. Incredibly rough sketching in a notebook by hand
  3. Quick mock-ups and copious rectangle drawing in Figma

So give it a visit here. Finally, shout out to I Think You Should Quote, another (and better) fan site I found in my inspo-collecting phase. And let’s hope we get another season of this show no matter how long it takes.
