Late last year a friend asked me to make a digital flyer for a joint birthday party she was throwing. The hosts were all from Miami and the party was in New York City so her idea for the flyer was “classic NY bodega coffee cup (blue one) but the designs on it are Miami themed - like flamingos and palm trees and Cuban coffee.” Pretty cool idea I thought!

If you didn’t know, the name of the “classic NY bodega coffee cup” design is the Anthora. Unlike Bob Benson, I’ve personally never had a coffee served to me in these cups, but they are out here and they are iconic. I used the cup as inspiration and made a version with Miami imagery as requested:

This was just an element of the finished flyer but I enjoy just having this really funky standalone asset. I added it to my already chaotic GIPHY profile and can use it as a very confusing sticker. For good measure I also decided to make the same gif with the original Anthora design:

Someday I’d like to learn Blender, Three.js or some other 3D software/library but until then I used boring old HTML and CSS animations, plus an unholy combination of random tools on the internet (like Ezgif.com which absolutely rules) to make these. Also someday I’ll blog about my actual process and embed the actual component in the blog post body or on CodePen but for now just wanted to quickly post something that I just think is neat.
